F1 Student Visa Renewal
F1 Student Visa Renewal

Check Your Eligibility for Renewal
- The renewal of an F1 visa generally must be done from outside the United States.
Complete the DS-160 Form
- Fill out the DS-160 form online on the U.S. Department of State's website. This is the same form used to apply for any nonimmigrant visa.
- Print the DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode, as you will need it for the next phase.
Schedule an Appointment
- Pay the visa application fee (MRV). Make sure to keep the payment receipt, as it will be required to schedule the appointment.
Schedule Your Appointment at the Embassy or Consulate
- If you need to renew your visa in person, schedule an appointment at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to your location.
Gather the Necessary Documents
- Valid Passport: It must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.
- Updated Form I-20: You must have an updated I-20 signed by both you and your educational institution. This form should reflect your current academic status and study dates.
- Proof of SEVIS Fee Payment: Ensure you have a receipt for the SEVIS fee payment. This is the same fee you paid before your initial trip.
- Financial Statements: Provide proof that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your tuition, housing, and living expenses.
- Recent Photograph: A photo that meets the specific requirements set by the U.S. Department of State.
- Academic Certificates (if applicable): Transcripts, diplomas, or any relevant academic documents, especially if you've changed programs or completed a degree.
Attend the Interview
- If you do not qualify for renewal without an interview, you will need to attend an interview at the embassy or consulate.
- Bring all required documents and be prepared to answer questions about your academic situation, study plans, and ties to your home country.
Receive Your Passport
- If your visa is approved, you will receive your passport either by courier or for pickup at the embassy or consulate.
Additional Considerations:
- Do not overstay: Make sure to apply for your visa renewal before it expires or shortly after. Overstaying in the U.S. can impact your eligibility for future visas.
- Processing time: The time may vary, so it is recommended to start the process well in advance of your visa expiration.
